Personal info taken in recent cyber attack on U of W

The University of Winnipeg has confirmed personal information of current and former students and faculty was stolen during a cyber attack last week.

In an update to the community campus Thursday, university officials said data from a university file server was compromised during an attack it believes “most likely occurred in the week before March 24.”

Names, social insurance numbers, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, tuition amounts, employee compensation information and bank account information were taken.

“Our community has been subject to a cybercrime. It is disturbing that higher education institutions like the university and other public-sector organizations are being targeted by cyber attacks,” the university said in a statement. 

“This has been a terrible incident that has directly impacted our community, and for that we are deeply sorry. Rest assured that we will carefully consider the results of our investigation with a commitment to emerge from this incident with stronger cyber defences.”

A list of students and faculty members whose information Is believed to have been compromised includes current and former staff employed since 2003; students enrolled in U of W undergraduate and graduate programs since the academic year beginning in Sept. 2018; students enrolled in Professional, Applied and Continuing Education and English Language Program since the academic year beginning in Sept. 2019; and, students to whom the university issued T4 forms since 2016.

The university is offering those believed to be affected a two-year credit monitoring service, which it said is “aligned with common practice in these situations.”
