On June 23 at around 12:30 a.m., police were called to the scene where they found a woman who had sustained life-threatening injuries. The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where she later died from her injuries.

The Homicide Unit assumed the investigation and identified the victim as 29-year-old Norma Jean Sumner, a Dauphin River First Nation member but had recently been residing in Winnipeg. Family notifications have been made, police said.

The investigation has determined that the victim and suspect did not know one another before becoming involved in a physical altercation.

The investigation continued, resulting in the suspect being identified. On Wednesday, General Patrol members arrested the suspect while he was walking in the 200 block of Salter Street. He was then turned over to the Homicide Unit for further processing.

The 23-year-old has been charged with manslaughter.

He has been detained in custody.
