Police nab arson suspect after Red River College fire, theft

Winnipeg police have made an arrest in an arson incident that evacuated Red River College’s Exchange District campus in February.

Police say a 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment from the Princess Street school before setting a fire during midday while staff and students were on campus.

The school was evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

Police say video surveillance helped identify the suspect, and a subsequent investigation by fire officials and police determined it was set deliberately.

On Thursday, police arrested Treysten Porteous near Main Street and Logan Avenue.

He was charged with three crimes, including arson with disregard to human life, arson causing property damage and theft over $5,000.

He’s been detained in custody.
