Police nab suspected fire bug in Inkster Industrial Park

Around midnight on Thursday, a person flagged down Winnipeg police in the 600 block of Sheppard Street regarding a man believed to be responsible for multiple fires set in the area.

Officers located the suspect in the rear lane of a business in Winnipeg’s Inkster Industrial Park neighbourhood and arrested him without incident. They said they seized a lighter from him.

The investigation led police to believe one person was involved in several fires. On Aug. 20, a fire was started in a large industrial garbage bin behind a retail business in the 2000 block of McPhillips Street, causing $500 in damage. On Sept. 21, there was a fire in a trailer behind another business in the same area, resulting in $28,000 in damages, including to a nearby garage and on Sept. 30, a pile of scrap wood was lit on fire behind a grocery store on Sheppard Avenue, causing $1,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported in any of these incidents.

A 43-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with four counts of arson causing damage to property, four counts of possession of an incendiary device, and eight counts of failing to comply with a release order. He remains in custody.
