The new program, “Safe Shop – Working Together for a Safe and Joyful Holiday Season,” focuses on creating a secure environment for shoppers, retailers, and staff across the city.

Holiday shopping can bring joy, but it can also attract criminal activity. Retail theft and related incidents often increase during this time, affecting businesses and the community. To address these challenges, the police are taking proactive measures to protect the public.

Residents can expect a noticeable increase in police presence in popular shopping areas throughout December. Officers, including members of the Major Crimes Division, will be stationed at key retail locations. Their presence is intended to deter theft, respond quickly to incidents, and provide peace of mind to those enjoying the season’s festivities.

The police emphasize that community safety is a shared responsibility. Shoppers, retailers, and law enforcement can work together to reduce crime and foster a safer environment for everyone. Shoppers are encouraged to stay alert, secure valuables, and use well-lit areas. Designated Buy & Sell Exchange Zones at police stations are also available for safe secondary market transactions.

Retailers are advised to prioritize the safety of their staff and customers. In emergencies, calling 9-1-1 is crucial, while non-emergency incidents can be reported online to help police track trends and plan their responses. The police urge businesses to remain calm during disturbances and remember that property can be replaced—safety should come first.

Winnipeg police said that a collective effort can make a meaningful difference. By working together, the community can reduce crime and ensure the holiday season remains enjoyable for all.
