The closure will allow for underground work to prepare for the demolition of concrete barricades and other major construction. Local access to the Fairmont Hotel and nearby surface lots will be maintained via Lombard Street.

A portion of the roadway will reopen on Nov. 16 to accommodate the annual Santa Claus Parade.

The city said the ongoing work will involve the removal of existing barrier walls, the installation of new traffic signals and streetlights, and the addition of a curb extension on the southeast corner to reduce pedestrian crossing distances. New sidewalks and curbs will also be added to improve pedestrian access at all four corners of the intersection.

Construction is expected to be substantially complete by June 20, 2025, with full completion by June 27, 2025. This work is part of a broader redevelopment project aimed at facilitating the launch of Winnipeg Transit’s new Primary Transit Network by June 29, 2025. The new pedestrian crossing is expected to open by July 1, 2025.

Further design work for Portage & Main will begin in 2025 as part of the rapid transit (downtown corridors) preliminary design study.
