Remembrance Day events in Winnipeg

Amid major wars throughout much of the world, Winnipeggers will pause on Nov. 11 to remember those who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace.

More than 2.3 million Canadians have served in such a capacity, and more than 118,000 gave their lives and futures in hope we may live in peace.

A look at Remembrance Day services in the city on Monday

Hosted by the Joint Veterans Association of Manitoba, the largest ceremony in the province will be held at the RBC Convention Centre, with doors open at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony begins at 10:40 a.m. and is expected to end at about 12:30 p.m.

• The Royal Winnipeg Rifles service takes place at Vimy Ridge Memorial Park off Portage Avenue. The program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m.

• A service at ANAVETS Unit 283 Assiniboia at 3584 Portage Ave., begins at 10:40 a.m., with doors open at 9:30 a.m. Post-service activities take place from 12:45 p.m. to 6 p.m.

• HMSC Chippawa hosts a ceremony at 1 Navy Way at 10:30 a.m., with doors opening a half-hour earlier.

• The Minto Armoury’s memorial at 969 St. Matthews Ave., runs from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with doors open at 9 a.m.

• A commemoration service is being held at the cenotaph at the St. Norbert Cemetery beginning at 10:45 a.m.

• The Charleswood Legion 11 will host a ceremony at Oak Park High School which starts at 10 a.m. and will last for two hours. Many other Royal Canadian Legions will also host events, with the Royal Canadian Air Force conducting flypasts over ceremonies at Oak Park, St. James and Bruce Park, Vimy Ridge Park, HMSC Chippawa, Transcona, and Henderson locations.
