Right time, right place as firefighters come across house fire

It was a case of right time, right place as a fire crew came across a house fire Saturday night. They were driving past the building at around 7:42 p.m., when firefighters noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the house and called it in.

When additional Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews arrived at the fire in a single-family bungalow in the 400 block of Young Street, they launched a fire attack from the exterior of the building. Once the flames were knocked down, crews were able to attack the fire from inside.

The fire was declared under control at just before 8:15 p.m., officials said.

All occupants of the building managed to get out safely prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. During a search of the building, firefighters located a deceased cat.

Meanwhile at around 1:39 a.m. Sunday, WFPS crews were called to a fire in a three-storey apartment building on Ellice Avenue.

When they arrived, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure, officials said. Crews fought the fire from inside the building and it was declared under control at 2:27 a.m.

All occupants of the building got out safely. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was deployed to assist displaced residents find temporary accommodations.

Both fires are under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
