Robbery, aggravated assault charges laid after women injured in violent incidents

A 40-year-old man faces robbery and aggravated assault charges following a series of violent incidents over the weekend where three women were injured in carjackings.

On Saturday at around 12:30 p.m., a man entered a commercial business in the 1000 block of Nairn Avenue, pulled out a lighter, and threatened a cashier demanding money. The man fled without receiving any money.

About 15 minutes later, police said the same man confronted an elderly woman, who was sitting in her vehicle nearby. The male pulled her out of the vehicle and threw her to the ground, threatened to stab her before fleeing from the scene in her vehicle. The elderly female victim in her 80s suffered serious injuries.

The following day at around 5:45 a.m., the man confronted another female victim at a commercial business in the 1600 block of Regent Avenue West where he attempted to rob her of her vehicle. She was thrown to the ground, sustaining minor injuries. Police said he was unable to start the vehicle and fled the area after stealing the woman’s purse.

At around 7:30 a.m., the man entered a commercial business in the 1600 block of Regent Avenue West and confronted another female victim who he lured outside after telling her that there was something wrong with her parked vehicle. The man then allegedly assaulted the victim, punching her several times in the upper body area, and threatened to kill her. The suspect male entered her vehicle and fled the area.

The stolen vehicle is the last incident was located by the Tactical Support Team unoccupied in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue. With the assistance of East District and North District General Patrol officers, the suspect was located in the area and arrested.

“People need to go about their business as usual,” said Winnipeg Police spokesperson Const. Pat Saydak. “They can’t be afraid of what goes on. Obviously, these are random (incidents) and this is not normal and we’re happy to have made an arrest in this case. We take this matter very seriously.”

The Major Crimes Unit has charged a 40-year-old man with four counts of robbery as well as aggravated assault, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and possession of stolen property. He was detained in custody.
