Investigating General Patrol officers learned that the 59-year-old male victim had been playing VLTs when an adult male suspect next to him engaged in a conversation. As the victim continued to play, the suspect produced a machete and robbed the victim of approximately $130. The suspect fled on foot before police arrived, and the victim was uninjured.

The suspect returned to the business on Sunday evening to play VLTs and was recognized by staff as involved in the initial reported robbery. Staff called police but the suspect fled before they arrived.

Just over an hour later, officers located the suspect in the 1800 block of Ellice Avenue and arrested him without incident, police said. Officers found a machete concealed on his person, which was seized as evidence.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and charged the 23-year-old from Winnipeg with robbery, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was detained in custody.
