Police were called to a residence in west Winnipeg on Sept. 16 to check on two women reported being held against their will, Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday in a release.

They said “indications of human trafficking” were observed, while a large amount of street drugs inducing meth, cocaine, Xanax, and fentanyl were seized along with a rifle, handgun, various ammunition, and bear spray were seized.

WPS said the women were brought to safety, with partner agencies the Salvation Army and the Red Dress team assisting in providing resources for the victim.

Investigators learned a 46-year-old man from Saskatchewan met one of the victims through a dating app in his home province, and “manipulated her to believe they were involved in a romantic relationship.”

She and another adult female were brought to Manitoba and forced to create and post social media advertisements offering sexual services for his financial profit, police said, noting the suspect took their ID and used electronic devices to track their movements.

The man was charged Sept. 18 with two counts each of human trafficking and procuring a person to provide sexual services, sexual assault, and a number of drug and firearm offences. He is in custody.
