Second-degree murder charge laid after fatal stabbing early Sunday

Second-degree murder charge has been laid following a stabbing early Sunday morning in The Maples neighbourhood, Winnipeg Police said.

At shortly before 4 a.m., police were called to the first 100 of Marlow Court following reports of a serious assault. When General Patrol officers arrived, they found a man with serious injuries consistent with being stabbed.

Emergency medical care was provided, and the injured man was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, police said.

Members of the Homicide Unit were notified and continued the investigation.

The deceased man has been identified as 36-year-old Kennedy Maxwell Elk. He was a member of Dakota Tipi First Nation, currently residing in Winnipeg.

About five hours later, Tactical Support Team members arrested a 34-year-old man at a hotel in the 2500 block of Portage Avenue.

He has been charged with second-degree murder and detained in custody.
