Second-degree murder charges laid after fatal arson

Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal fire that claimed the lives of two people on Sept. 14.

A 28-year-old Winnipegger was arrested in the 700 block of Mountain Avenue on Wednesday and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of arson with disregard for human life. He remains in custody.

The fire in a mixed-use building in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue broke out at 2:49 a.m. on Sept. 14. Firefighters from the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service (WFPS) rescued two victims from one of the building’s suites. The victims, identified as 49-year-old Geda Wodisso and 38-year-old Zenabu Gula, were taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died from their injuries. Two other adults were treated for smoke inhalation.

The victims, a married couple, were not known to the suspect, and family notifications have been completed.

The Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information or video surveillance footage related to the case is urged to contact investigators or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
