Police were told that on Monday evening a man approached a female in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue and the two struck up a conversation before the woman was lured to a nearby residence.

Police said a residence was broken into and, once inside, the woman was barricaded and prevented from leaving. The woman was physically and sexually assaulted, and, at one point, she was rendered unconscious. The victim told police her life was threatened and she was robbed of her property. She was able to get away and call police when the man fell asleep.

Police found the suspect, a 39-year-old Winnipeg man, asleep inside the residence. He was taken into custody and arrested.

Members of the sex crimes unit are investigating.

The suspect is facing charges of sexual assault, uttering threats, robbery, forcible confinement, break and enter, breach of recognizance and fail to comply with condition of release.

He is in custody.
