Winker Police Service (WPS) said that just after 9 a.m. on Sunday morning they got a call about a 45-year-old man they were told had assaulted another person inside a home in Winkler, and had also allegedly threatened a neighbour.
Police said when they arrived at the home the man had weapons and had barricaded himself in a room in the basement, leading to a standoff.
The Regional Support Tactical Team secured the area around the home and neighbours in some nearby homes were asked to leave until the standoff was over.
Police said their Regional Crisis Negotiation Unit was able to have a brief conversation with the man over the phone, but they said “continued conversation was not possible.”
After several more attempts to make contact, the Regional Support Tactical Team entered the home and police said the man was safely removed and arrested.
The man has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
