Three teens arrested after attempted carjacking Winnipeg

Winnipeg police responded to an attempted armed carjacking and assault on Cathedral Avenue around 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police spoke to the victim, a 52-year-old woman, who told them she saw three suspects attempting to steal her parked vehicle. One suspect, armed with a firearm, demanded her keys. When she resisted, she was assaulted in the upper body with the firearm and was threatened with death. Despite the threats and assault, the suspects failed to steal the vehicle and fled the scene. The woman sustained minor injuries.

Officers apprehended two youths and one adult nearby without further incident. They seized controlled substances and a small amount of cash from one of the suspects. The firearm, later identified as a BB rifle, was discarded during the suspects’ flight.

Police said the suspects were involved in other criminal activity as shortly before the attempted carjacking, a 2016 Kia Forte on Machray Avenue and a 2020 Kia Soul near Church Avenue and Powers Street were damaged. The total damage to the vehicles is estimated at approximately $1,000.

The suspects, identified as an 18-year-old male, a 16-year-old male, and a 17-year-old female, now face multiple charges. The 18-year-old is charged with armed robbery, two counts of mischief under $5,000, three counts of possession of scheduled substances (cocaine, fentanyl, ecstasy), and possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana in a public place. The 16-year-old is charged with armed robbery, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and two counts of mischief under $5,000. The 17-year-old female is charged with armed robbery using a restricted firearm or prohibited firearm.

Despite the violent nature of the charges, all three suspects were released with undertakings, as mandated by the Criminal Code.
