There were two separate incidents involving five rookies on the Prairie Mountain Mustangs team between the ages of 15-16, RCMP said in a release. Both happened at a Winnipeg hotel while the Pembina Valley-area team was in the city for tournament play, in November 2023 and January 2024.

“This type of behaviour – violent and humiliating initiations – is unacceptable and is going to result in criminal charges for the three male youth involved,” Tara Seel, a Manitoba RCMP spokeswoman, said.
Two of the three 17-year-old males arrested Monday were to be charged with sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault and forcible confinement. The other is to be charged with sexual assault and assault.
They were released with a court appearance scheduled in Winnipeg on June 10.
The incidents were reported to RCMP in Carman on Feb. 20.
The team is made up of players from high schools in the communities of Somerset, Notre-Dame-des-Lourdes, and Miami. The Mustangs withdrew from provincial playoffs and were made ineligible for post-season awards and an all-star game while the RCMP investigated.
“We have worked closely with the schools, the Prairie Spirit School Division, and coaches to determine what took place and to progress the investigation,” Seel said.
