The White House confirmed that, starting Saturday, Canada and Mexico will face a 25 per cent tariff on all goods entering the U.S., with a 10 per cent rate on Canadian energy. China will incur a 10 per cent tariff across the board. Trump told the media that the move would make America “very rich and very strong” and indicated he might soften the impact on oil imports with a reduced rate.
The tariffs, which may raise prices for American consumers, are part of Trump’s strategy to use economic pressure as leverage against illegal immigration and the smuggling of chemicals involved in fentanyl production. He indicated that they would remain in effect until the fentanyl crisis is resolved. Sources suggest that the Canadian government might announce retaliatory measures as early as this evening, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promising a “forceful and immediate response.”
The Winnipeg Sun will continue to follow developments and provide updates as they unfold.
