Protesters have been given until Monday morning to take down their encampment at the University of Manitoba, or face legal action.

“We expect the peaceful removal of the encampment by 8 a.m. on Monday, July 15 or UM will pursue legal remedies for its removal,” reads a letter from the office of the provost to the Students for Justice in Palestine, organizers of the encampment.

The encampment first went up on the university’s campus quad on May 7, following similar actions at other North American post-secondary institutions in response to Israel’s retaliation following a deadly attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.

Initially, the encampment was supposed to last only three days, but has been there ever since.

On May 31, university leadership met directly with encampment participants to address their concerns with what the university described in a July 9 update as “a comprehensive set of commitments.”

“It is now the expectation of UM leadership that you peacefully dismantle the encampment and return the use of the Quad space to the entire UM community,” said the letter to the SJP. “Your right to peaceful protest does not include the ability to continuously occupy university space that is to be enjoyed by all community members. The current encampment has removed UM’s ability to control and use the Quad and is incompatible with UM policies.”
