Use of force reasonable in arrest of stolen vehicle suspect: IIU

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said police used a reasonable amount of force to arrest a suspect after a stolen truck crashed into a police vehicle in June, seriously injuring two officers.

Officers spotted a Lincoln Mark pickup truck near Inkster Boulevard and St. Cross Street shortly before the crash, which happened at Main Street and Belmont Avenue at about 4 a.m. on June 7.

The IIU said in a release Thursday the driver of the stolen truck tried to flee after the collision and police used a Taser on the man during brief use-of-force encounter. He was taken into custody and brought to a police station, where officer noticed injuries, the release said, and brought him to the Health Science Centre.

A 25-year-old man was charged with two counts each of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and cause bodily harm by criminal negligence, resisting arrest, and possession of property obtained by crime.
