A Winnipeg man is facing charges of sexual exploitation following a police investigation into allegations of sexual assault at a youth custody facility in Manitoba. The Winnipeg Police Service began the investigation in November 2023 after a youth reported being sexually assaulted while in custody.

Police said between 2022 and 2023, a juvenile counsellor formed an inappropriate relationship with the victim, providing extra canteen items in exchange for sexual acts. The survivor came forward with the allegations, prompting a detailed inquiry by the Sex Crimes Unit.
On Tuesday of this week, police arrested a 51-year-old of Winnipeg. He has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and obtaining sexual services from a person under 18. Wensel was released with conditions prohibiting contact with anyone under the age of 18, as mandated by the Criminal Code.
