A 23-year-old Shamattawa man was killed in Winnipeg Friday night after an argument escalated into an assault.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Jamal Eli Preston Miles, a member of the Shamattawa First Nation who lived in Winnipeg.
At about 8:45 p.m., Friday Winnipeg police were called to the 500 block of Alexander Avenue for a report of an injured man. Officers found a man with life-threatening injuries. Police provided emergency medical care before the victim was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said the suspect or suspects fled the scene. The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Initial findings suggest that several individuals were involved in a verbal confrontation outside, which escalated into a physical altercation resulting in the fatal assault.
Police said the family of Miles has been notified.
