Winnipeg MP won’t seek re-election: report

Winnipeg MP and federal cabinet minister Dan Vandal will not seek re-election, according to a report from the CBC.

Vandal, who has represented Saint Boniface-Saint Vital since 2015, has been a key figure in local and federal politics. He served on the Winnipeg City Council from 1995 to 2004 and again from 2006 to 2014. Vandal also ran for mayor in 2004, finishing second to Sam Katz, and briefly served as acting mayor following Glen Murray’s resignation.

In his federal career, Vandal was elected to the House of Commons in 2015 as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He became the Minister of Northern Affairs in 2019 and later held roles as Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and the Prairies Economic Development Agency of Canada.

The Winnipeg Sun has reached out to Vandal’s office for confirmation and comment on his decision not to seek re-election.
