Winnipeg newcomer assaulted after exiting city bus

On Sunday morning, Winnipeg police responded to a robbery near Sanford Street and Sargent Avenue. Officers found a 21-year-old woman with a minor upper-body injury.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service provided medical treatment on the scene.

Police said they arrested a woman suspected to be involved in the assault, thanks to a passerby directing them to a nearby location on Strathcona Street.

The victim, a newcomer to the city, had just gotten off a bus near Empress Street. While walking, she was grabbed from behind. The woman attempted to steal her cell phone. When the victim resisted, the suspect assaulted her with a small metal weapon, resulting in a minor injury.

Police believe the incident was random, with no prior connection between the victim and the suspect.

A 22-year-old Winnipeg resident was charged with robbery and failing to comply with a probation order.
