More than 700 motorists were ticketed in a Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) and Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) joint initiative to combat speeding, one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities in the province. The Speed Safety Campaign aimed to reduce the average of 20 annual deaths caused by speeding and aggressive driving in Manitoba.

From Nov. 1 to Nov. 16, 2024, police targeted speeders during peak traffic hours between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., focusing on areas with heavy rush hour and industrial traffic. A total of 725 speeding tickets were issued, along with 74 citations for other Highway Traffic Act violations.
“Speeding and aggressive driving contribute significantly to winter collisions, as reduced traction on icy and snow-covered roads increases the time and distance needed to stop safely,” said Maria Campos, MPI’s vice president & chief customer and product officer in a release on Wednesday. “This campaign with the Winnipeg Police Service demonstrates how enforcement, education, and public awareness work together to reduce risks and create safer roads for everyone.”

The campaign is part of MPI’s Enhanced Enforcement Program, which funds additional police resources to target high-risk driving behaviours.
WPS Inspector Marc Philippot said road safety is a shared responsibility.
“Adhere to the rules of the road, drive according to the conditions, and have conversations with your loved ones to reduce their speed to help keep everyone safe,” he said.
The campaign also highlights the increased dangers of winter driving. MPI advises drivers to adjust their speed to road conditions, leave extra space between vehicles, and be prepared by installing winter tires and clearing snow and ice from vehicles.
