Under the new schedule, all libraries will be open on Wednesdays year-round. Additionally, hours on Saturdays will be extended during the summer, and more libraries will open on Sundays in the fall and winter. Overall operating hours will increase by 9.7% annually.

“These new and expanded hours will allow more Winnipeggers to benefit from the services our libraries provide,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a press release. “Whether it’s discovering a new book, accessing resources, or participating in community programs, these enhancements ensure that our libraries remain accessible and welcoming to everyone.”

Vivian Santos, chairperson of the standing policy committee on community services, said the changes were passed due.

Key changes include:

– The number of libraries open on Sundays in the fall and winter will increase from six to 10.
– The number of libraries open on Saturdays in the summer will rise from three to 10.
– Six libraries will shift Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday openings from 10 a.m. to noon.
– Three libraries will shift from 1 p.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, while two will open at 10 a.m.
– Harvey Smith Library will now open at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, instead of 1 p.m.

The expanded hours are part of the 2024-2027 Multi-Year Budget, which includes a $3.1 million investment over four years. The budget also covers new library materials, programming, security improvements, and the construction of a new library in Northwest Winnipeg.
