The Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release its traffic division spotted a Honda Civic racing with another vehicle on Sunday in the area of Wyper Road on the West Perimeter highway.

It reached a speed of 179 km/h before failing to stop for police twice and running a red light at McGillivray Boulevard and the Perimeter at 202 km/h, WPS said.

Police caught up with the driver at his residence, where he was ticketed for driving carelessly, two charges each of speeding and failing to stop when requested by a peace officer, and race with another motor vehicle.

He faces $5,158 in fines and was also issued a serious offence notice and street racing administrative suspension, requiring a show cause hearing that could result in a license suspension. About 90% of the hearings result in a suspension, MPI statistics show.
