Winnipegger arrested for child exploitation and voyeurism

In July 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) began an investigation into child sexual abuse imagery found on a suspect’s mobile device. The discovery led to a warrant being issued for the individual. Further searches of the device revealed video recordings, taken in April 2023 and May 2024, showing children and adults in various stages of undress at a public pool in the Maples neighbourhood of Winnipeg.

On Oct. 2, a 37-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested and charged with several offences, including possession and accessing child pornography, voyeurism, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation. Police said the man had inappropriate interactions with a student while teaching at a high school in the North End of Winnipeg.

The man had been employed as a teacher in multiple Winnipeg schools until May 2024 but is no longer working in education. Following his arrest the man was released as mandated by the Criminal Code.

The ICE Unit continues to investigate and urges anyone with information to contact investigators at 204-986-6172. The Winnipeg Police Service also reminds the public to remain vigilant in public change rooms and washrooms, encouraging the reporting of any suspicious behaviour or items.
