The 2024 Checkstop Program runs throughout December, including New Year’s Eve, to enforce impaired driving legislation and improve road safety.

As a result of the stops, police issued 12 roadside alcohol screening device warnings and recorded nine roadside fails. Two drivers were charged with criminal impaired driving offences. Officers also issued 12 traffic offence notices for various infractions during the week.

Police said impaired driving remains a significant public safety issue, contributing to nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities in Manitoba. The Checkstop Program is a key part of the police’s strategy to address this issue and deter individuals from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The police remind all motorists of the importance of making responsible decisions. Their message is clear: if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, do not drive. The program will continue throughout December, with officers maintaining a visible presence on Winnipeg streets to enforce the law and keep the community safe.
