“All too often, motorists wait until the first snowfall before preparing their vehicles for winter driving,” said Nadia Matos, manager of external communications at CAA Manitoba in a press release. “Now is the time to get your winter tires on and check that your car battery will last the winter months. Even a fully charged battery can lose power when the temperature dips below 0° Celsius.”

Winter readiness tips from CAA Manitoba

Install winter tires

Winter tires improve traction on cold and snowy roads, reducing braking distance by up to 25%. CAA offers mobile tire services for members until November 15 for a fee.

Test your battery

CAA will test members’ car batteries for free. Even fully charged batteries can lose up to 30% of their charge in cold temperatures.

Prepare an emergency kit

Your kit should include water, non-perishable food, jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, batteries, waterproof matches, candles, and cat litter. Add extra mitts, socks, and footwear.

Check your brakes

If your brakes feel different or make noise, have them checked. Proper brakes are crucial for stopping on icy roads.

Inspect your block heater

Make sure your outdoor plug is working and check the extension cord for damage.

Check lighting

Ensure all interior and exterior lights are functioning, and that headlights are aimed properly.

Top up fluids

Keep extra windshield washer fluid rated for -40ºC in your trunk, and don’t let your gas tank drop below half full.
