WPS arrest 13 men in crackdown responding to reports of youth sex workers

Thirteen men were arrested by Winnipeg police in a six-day crackdown against obtaining sexual services for consideration, the WPS said in a release on Tuesday.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Counter Exploitation Unit (CEU), in coordination with the Indigenous Women and Girls Safety Strategy, continues its efforts to address exploitation in the community. Recent outreach activities and offender sweeps were conducted in response to reports of youth being propositioned in local neighbourhoods and online.

Between Sept. 27 and Oct. 2, the CEU carried out a proactive sweep in Winnipeg’s North and West End areas. Thirteen men, aged 23 to 62, were arrested for obtaining sexual services for consideration. The individuals were released on undertakings, in accordance with the Criminal Code. Additionally, 11 vehicles were seized under the Highway Traffic Act during the operation.

As part of its ongoing efforts, the CEU also engaged with individuals working in the sex trade, offering them access to community resources. The unit’s focus on outreach and support is aimed at providing assistance to vulnerable individuals while addressing public safety concerns.

The Winnipeg Police Service encourages anyone with information related to exploitation in their community to contact the Counter Exploitation Unit at 204-986-3464 or to report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org. In cases of emergency, residents should call 911.
