Youth charged in bear spray attacks in OCN, police say

A male youth faces numerous charges after a number of people were bear sprayed in two separate incidents in Opaskwayak Cree Nation on Saturday, Manitoba First Nations Police Service said.

At shortly after 8:30 p.m., MFNPS officers were called to a residence where a group of males discharged bear spray inside a residence. When they arrived, police found multiple victims who required medical assistance due to exposure. EMS were called to assist, but no suspects were located.

Two hours later, police were dispatched for a similar incident at the Gordon Lathlin Arena, where the annual Canuck Fair was taking place. Police again found multiple victims who had been bear sprayed. No suspects were located.

Early Sunday, police located and arrested a youth suspect. He is being held in custody and will be appearing in Court at a later date. The male youth accused was charged with unauthorized possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, administering a noxious substance, mischief under $5,000 and failing or refusing to comply with a sentence or disposition.

The youth also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failing to comply with the conditions of his release order. police said. The youth cannot be identified as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
