Camp counsellor dreams

Once she turns 16, 12-year-old Rain knows exactly what she wants to do: become a camp counsellor.

Vanessa Yaskiw said it was quite an ordeal trying to figure out a way to get her daughter to camp.

“I wouldn’t be able to do it on my own,” she said, noting she was thrilled when she learned about the Sunshine Fund through a friend of Rain’s at school.

“We were so excited,” Yaskiw said.

Rain visited Camp Arnes last year and shared a cabin with her best friend. She loved her time in the water — canoeing and swimming — and an activity called ‘media’ where campers put their creativity to use. Last year, Rain’s group made a music video for Taylor Swift’s You Belong with Me.

Now Rain is hooked and can’t wait to return to camp this year.

“She’s the best kid in the world” Yaskiw said, “I’ll go above and beyond to make her happy.”

Camps across Manitoba and Ontario will be attended by 600 kids this summer who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend thanks to donors of the Free Press Sunshine Fund.
