Caregiver charged in death of Bloodvein girl, 2

RCMP are investigating the death of a toddler who was brought to the Bloodvein First Nation nursing station at 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 with serious injuries.

When officers arrived, they were told the girl, 2, had been pronounced dead.

The following day, officers visited the community and executed a search warrant at the home where the child was living.

An autopsy earlier this week confirmed the girl died from injuries as a result of a homicide.

On Wednesday, the girl’s primary caregiver was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Burma Skye, 56, was remanded into custody.

“The homicide of a two-year-old girl is not just a loss for her family but a profound loss to the community” Sgt. Laura LeDrew, RCMP major crime services lead investigator, said in a news release. “This is a senseless crime that will have a profound impact on the community, first responders and investigating officers. Our number one priority right now is seeking justice for the victim.”

The remains of another First Nations girl, Xavia Butler, were found in a barn in the Rural Municipality of Grahamdale in June. RCMP have said the death of the one- or two-year-old girl was being investigated as a homicide. No charges have been laid.

Last February, a Wasagamack First Nation woman was charged with second-degree murder in the death of a one-year-old boy. Jayna Knott, 26, was remanded in custody.
