Ceremony held for RCMP change of command

A symbolic change-of-command ceremony was held at Lower Fort Garry on Thursday to mark Manitoba’s top Mountie taking the role earlier this year.

The ceremony north of Winnipeg included a troop of RCMP officers marching in red serge and the RCMP pipe-and-drum band.

Assistant commissioner Scott McMurchy began the new job in May. Born in Rossburn and raised in The Pas, he was 21 when he became an RCMP officer.

“When I was young, my family and I saw the Mounties in my community of The Pas — they were always front and centre. It inspired in me a desire to serve,” he said in a news release.

McMurchy, who was previously in charge of criminal operations in Manitoba, said he recognizes the importance of reconciliation.

“I am committed to the tenet of, ‘Nothing about us without us,’ and under my command, the RCMP will continue to listen and collaborate with Métis, Inuit and First Nation people across Manitoba.”
