The city announced the recipients of medals recognizing people’s contributions to Winnipeg and their communities Thursday.
The first Winnipeg 150 Medals were handed out Thursday morning, and the final ones will be handed out on Oct. 31.
Mayor Scott Gillingham is distributing 30 of the medals, and eight more are being handed out in each of the city’s 15 wards. Recipients will also receive a certificate, and a tree will be planted in their name in a city park.
Some of the 30 people who will receive medals from the mayor include:
- David Northcott, who was the head of Winnipeg Harvest for more than 30 years
- Veteran broadcaster Scott Oake, who helped found the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre
- Olympic soccer gold-medallist Desiree Scott
- And Shahina Siddiqui, who founded the Islamic Social Services Association

“As we celebrate Winnipeg’s 150th anniversary, it’s important to honour the residents who have made exceptional contributions to our community,” Gillingham said in a news release.
“These recipients represent what makes Winnipeg special — people who give their time and energy to build a better future for all of us. I’m proud to recognize their efforts, and look forward to personally presenting some of these medals as we continue to mark this milestone year together.”
Nearly 600 nominations were received.
