Delivering Opportunity for Kids Who Need It Most – That’s Y

Here in Winnipeg, many children face barriers to accessing recreation and social activities, which arecritical for healthy development. Thanks to the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg and its donors, children like Hunter have the chance to thrive. This isn’t just a story about one child’s love of soccer; it’s a testament to how the Y changes lives.

Meet Hunter: A Story of Confidence and Connection

When we met Hunter, a 12-year-old soccer fanatic, he was dribbling a soccer ball as we walked toward the gym. His eyes lit up when another young member asked him to join a game. With approval from his mom, Charlene, Hunter excitedly joined in.

Hunter’s passion for sports is fueled by the opportunities he’s had at the Y. From swim lessons to basketball and soccer, the Y has provided him with a space to grow and connect with others. “The Y has given my son the life-saving skill of swimming and given me the peace of mind that he is safe in the water,” says Charlene.

Charlene’s Journey: Overcoming Challenges

Charlene has faced her share of challenges raising Hunter as a single mother. “Funds were very tight,” she explains. “Hunter has always been an active kid—he loves to play and keep busy, but I couldn’t afford many programs.”

Referred to the Y by a social service agency, Charlene found a lifeline through the Recreation Opportunities for Children and subsidized Member Access Program. These programs allowed Hunter to participate in a range of activities, providing not only physical outlets but also opportunities for social interaction and skill-building.

Experts agree that participation in physical activities significantly benefits children’s mental and emotional health. Research shows that kids who are regularly involved in sports experience improved self-esteem and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.

For Charlene, the Y was more than just a place for Hunter to play—it was a much-needed break for her as well. “It lets me get my mind off things, lets me relax, and gives me headspace to open up a bit more,” she shares.

Camp Stephens: A Life-Changing Experience

Last year, Hunter had the chance to attend Camp Stephens, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg’s overnight camp at Lake of the Woods. The experience was transformative. “He loved it. It gave him independence and confidence to learn new things and do things on his own,” says Charlene.

Research shows that camps like Camp Stephens help children develop resilience, independence, and social skills. For Hunter, camp provided a chance to explore nature and form lasting friendships. “He’s already excited to go back this year,” Charlene adds.

Pushing Through Financial Struggles

While Charlene now has a steady job, she continues to face financial challenges. “It’s still really hard to make ends meet,” she says, “but I will keep pushing to make sure Hunter gets opportunities because he deserves them along with every other kid.”

Charlene knows that many children don’t have the same opportunities as Hunter, which is why she’s so grateful to the donors who make these programs possible. “It really affects kids when they can’t participate,” she explains. “When they are at home all the time and don’t have social interaction, it’s not good.”

Social isolation can lead to negative mental health outcomes for children, including anxiety, poor cognitive development, and behavioral issues. Charlene is thankful for the Y’s role in helping Hunter build essential life skills. “It’s more than basketball or soccer—it’s figuring out problems, learning how to be part of a team. At the Y, he feels like he is part of something.”

The Y’s Commitment to Families

Hunter’s story is one example of how the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg helps families. Through programs like Recreation Opportunities for Children and the Member Access Program, the Y ensures that all children, regardless of financial barriers, have access to enriching programs that promote physical and emotional well-being.

Studies show that children who participate in safe, supportive environments are more likely to achieve academic success and develop higher self-esteem. The Y’s mission is to provide these opportunities for every family in need.
