Environment Canada is calling for a “Whiteout” in downtown Winnipeg.
The national weather service issued a cheeky advisory Sunday morning advising residents they could see a flurry of white in the city before and during Game 1 of a Winnipeg Jets playoff series against the Colorado Avalanche. The best-of-seven first-round NHL playoff series opens at Canada Life Centre this evening.
Despite temperatures in the mid-teens, “Localized whiteout conditions can be expected, however, in the vicinity of downtown Winnipeg,” Environment Canada’s forecast stated.

The actual forecast is for sunny skies, with wind gusts up to 20 km/h. The mercury is expected to hit 15 C at about 4 p.m., as fans are entering the Whiteout downtown street party.
The City of Winnipeg announced street closures because of the street party. Southbound Donald Street between Ellice and St. Mary avenues is closed from 8 a.m. Sunday until 3 a.m. Monday.
The sidewalks closed at noon Sunday and will reopen overnight Monday.
Graham Avenue is closed in both directions between Hargrave and Smith streets from 8 a.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Monday.
