Ex-teacher faces child porn, sex assault charges

A man who recently worked as a teacher in Winnipeg is accused of recording video of children and adults in the family change room at Seven Oaks Pool.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s internet child exploitation (ICE) unit was alerted to child sexual abuse imagery on a suspect’s mobile device in July. Police found illegal images on the phone, and an arrest warrant was issued, the WPS said in a news release handed out at a news conference Friday.

More searches of the device revealed the change room video recordings, made in April 2023 and this May, the WPS said.

A man was arrested on Oct. 2.

Investigators said the man previously “inappropriately engaged with a student” while teaching at a high school in the North End. He worked as a teacher in several Winnipeg schools until May and is no longer a teacher in Winnipeg, police said.

Matthew James Mousseau, a 37-year-old Winnipeg resident, is charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, voyeurism, sexual assault and sexual exploitation. He was released from police custody.

The ICE unit asked anyone with information related to the man who wants to speak to investigators at 204-986-6172.

“The Winnipeg Police Service reminds everyone to be aware of their surroundings, especially when using a change room or washroom facility in a public setting,” the release said.

“The public are encouraged to report suspicious items or activity in or around these settings.”
