Fire crews busy across city Thursday night, Friday morning

Winnipeg firefighters were kept busy Thursday evening and Friday morning as they battled five blazes in houses, garages and a warehouse.

No one was reported hurt in any of the fires and all are still being investigated.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the first fire was reported in a single-storey warehouse on Edwin Street in the Point Douglas area just before 7 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the building, but quickly brought it under control. Crews searched the building and found no one inside.

At about 8:15 p.m., crews raced to a fire in a bungalow on the 100 block of Dearborn Avenue in Elmwood, where residents had escaped before first responders arrived.

Firefighters found the flames spreading to a neighbouring home and managed to get the fire under control by about 8:45 p.m.

City of Winnipeg emergency social workers helped to find the residents a place to stay temporarily, WFPS said.

A vacant house on the 600 block of Westminster Avenue in West Broadway, which was previously damaged in two prior fires in August 2022 and May 2023, was the next to burn.

Firefighters were called to the two-storey house just before midnight, but managed to get the flames under control by about 12:45 a.m.

Later, at about 2:40 a.m., firefighters were called to a garage fire on the 500 block of Polson Avenue in the St. John’s neighbourhood.

As crews arrived, they saw one garage engulfed in flames, and another garage beginning to burn.
