High winds knock out power lines; Hydro crews still working on outages

Manitoba Hydro says it is working to restore power to customers across the province following a windstorm Saturday.

The public utility is providing updates on power outages in Winnipeg and across Manitoba on X (formerly Twitter).

Winnipeg’s River Heights neighbourhood remained without power Sunday morning, more than 14 hours after it had been knocked out.

“Update for River Heights: our crews will resume work on repairs this morning after pausing for safety reasons,” a post said Sunday morning. “Still no estimate for restoration. We appreciate your patience as we work to repair the damage caused by the extreme winds over the last 24 hours.”

The Free Press has reached out to Hydro for updates on outages.

Meanwhile, Hydro’s online outage reporting system is down for maintenance this weekend, a notice on its website says.

Customers are being advised to report outages by phone at 1-888-624-9376.

In a post Friday, Hydro warned customers that its online reporting system would be down as it braced for widespread outages.

“This weekend, winds could gust up to 100 km/hr in some areas. High winds can knock down tree branches and power lines, causing outages,” the post said, warning its online reporting system and outage map would be “unavailable.”
