Investigation ongoing after shots fired in St. Boniface; one injured

A man has been taken to hospital and police are investigating after receiving reports of gunshots in a St. Boniface apartment block late Sunday morning.

The nature of the man’s injuries hadn’t been confirmed as of Sunday afternoon, and Winnipeg Police Service spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said it was too early to provide any details on the ongoing investivation. She confirmed police responded to the area of 153 Aubert St. for a report of shots heard. Police tactical team officers and several police vehicles were on scene into the afternoon, searching the area and collecting evidence.

Neighbours told the Free Press they heard three or four gunshots. Next-door neighbour Anthony Robertson, who has lived there for two years, said it’s the third shooting in the area since he’s moved there.

The 65-year-old adopted a German Shepard after a shooting in March 2023 because he no longer feels safe.

Robertson’s family is urging him to move. He said, now, he’ll probably move to another neighbourhood after the winter.

“This is a scene played over too many times,” Robertson said from his front porch late Sunday afternoon. “I feel sorry for the residents because this is a gorgeous area.”

Robertson said it’s a “drug scene” every weekend. He says he sees multiple cars pull up at once and hand what he believes is drugs through the window. He often sees people in the field across from his home using substances.

“I’m not happy with it,” Robertson said. “I was shocked. It was crazy.”

Multiple police cars were parked in front of the apartment block, with some on the second-floor balcony. Others walked out of the main entrance carrying large paper bags.
