Man accused of attempting to stab police officers

A Winnipeg man is accused of attempting to stab police officers during an altercation at an inner-city home Sunday morning.

At about 9:20 a.m., officers responded to a report that a man had broken into a home in the 1100 block of Alfred Street.

Officers arrived to find the suspect exiting the home. As officers approached, the man threatened them with a knife, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

After asking the man to drop the weapon, the suspect tried to stab officers, police said. Officers then Tasered the man several times and took him into custody.

The suspect was assessed and cleared by emergency crews, police said.

Officers learned the suspect had been involved in a domestic dispute at the same home on Saturday, causing “substantial damage,” police said. He had fled before officers arrived on scene.

Tyler Vernon Dyke, 36, has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, uttering threats, resisting a peace officer, possession of a weapon, domestic assault and mischief over $5,000.

He remains in custody.
