Man charged after rifle pointed outside HSC

A Winnipeg man is in custody after police say he was carrying a semi-automatic rifle and “pointing it indiscriminately toward members of the public” outside Health Sciences Centre.

Police were sent to the 800 block of Sherbrook Street at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday after hospital security personnel, including an institutional safety officer, spotted a suspect walking outside and carrying a firearm, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Wednesday.

“Noting the security personnel’s presence, the suspect pointed the firearm in their direction before fleeing on foot. Security personnel maintained visual contact with the male until police arrived. Within minutes, attending (officers) … intercepted the male suspect walking in the area, still brandishing the firearm,” police said.

Officers seized an SKS rifle and a small quantity of what is believed to be methamphetamine. A suspect was arrested without incident, police said.

Wayne Nathan Roullette, 27, is facing numerous charges, including pointing a firearm, possessing a restricted firearm and public mischief.

Roullette refused to provide his legal name during his arrest, but investigators identified him using his fingerprints, police said.
