Man charged in fatal February stabbing on Fountain Street

A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a man in the Centennial area in February.

Rory Alexander Mousseau, 21, was arrested on a warrant Tuesday while he was already in custody on an unrelated matter. He remains in custody, the Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday.

Charles Danny Chartrand, 43, was found injured on the 200 block of Fountain Street at about 3:15 a.m. on Feb. 3 and later died in hospital. The WPS said the two men became involved in an altercation in the apartment block where they both lived.

Rory Alexander Mousseau has been charged with second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of Charles Danny Chartrand at an apartment complext on the 200 block of Fountain Street in February.

“We are all (feeling) mixed emotions right now, but mostly happy,” the victim’s older sister, Tanya Chartrand, said by phone. “I’ve been waiting for justice, for (a suspect) to get arrested, and it’s finally happening.”

Police asked for the public’s help in connection with the slaying May 9, saying police believe two people seen on security video had “valuable information” about the case. A WPS spokeswoman said Thursday that police are not searching for a second suspect after this week’s arrest.

Chartrand said she has not been in contact with police and does not have any more information about what might have led to the killing.

Mousseau has no adult criminal convictions, court records show. He is facing a slew of firearms charges as well as two counts of robbery with a gun for incidents on March 27 and April 5.
