A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of a 14-year-old girl in Chemawawin Cree Nation.

Chemawawin RCMP were sent to the community’s nursing station at about 1:25 a.m. Monday. The victim was dead when officers arrived.

Kingsley Lachose, 19, was arrested later that morning. He is also charged with failing to comply with a release order.

The RCMP forensic identification section and RCMP major crime services are in the community, which is located next to Easterville, helping with the ongoing investigation.

Quentin Mink, a Chemawawin band councillor, posted on social media Tuesday that a council meeting on “increased violence and illegal activity that continue to impact our community” either had been held or would be held Tuesday.

He offered “our sincerest condolences to the families” and said, “We ask for your prayers during this difficult time.”

Mink’s Facebook post contains an image of a document, dated May 7 and signed by chief and council. It states Chemawawin Cree Nation has declared a “crisis situation” because of the “increased violence and illegal activity that continue to impact our community negatively.”

The document states that machetes, knives, bear mace and guns are prohibited in the community and that anyone “who causes harm with any of the weapons mentioned will be subject to banishment.”

The document also mentions separate curfews for residents who are 18 and those who are 17 or younger. It also states anyone who refuses to shut down a known house party will be subject to removal from the home.
