Man on bail charged in double homicide on First Nation

A 19-year-old man who was out on bail for a slew of weapons offences has been charged in a double homicide in a First Nation north of Dauphin.

Oryan Flamand, a resident of Minegoziibe Anishinabe, which is formerly known as Pine Creek, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He remains in custody and is next due in court on June 13 in Dauphin.

Winnipegosis RCMP raced to reports of gunshots heard on West Road in the community at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers found an injured 34-year-old man, who died at the scene. The body of a 52-year-old woman was found in the same area five hours later. RCMP have not released the names of either victim.

A standoff with a suspect began at about 5:25 a.m. Shots were fired from the home he was in, but no RCMP officers were injured, police said earlier this week.

The suspect tried to flee in an off-road vehicle but was arrested, police said previously.

Flamand remains before the court on nine weapons charges, including assault with a weapon and three counts of pointing a firearm, all allegedly committed on Feb. 11 last year. That same date, he was accused of breaching a release order and a probation order. He was granted bail on Feb. 17, 2023.

He’s accused of failing to comply with the house arrest condition of his release order four times on three separate days in April this year.

Minegoziibe Anishinabe is roughly 110 kilometres north of Dauphin.
