Winnipeg police investigate the scene of a fatal shooting along the 400 block of Redwood Avenue.

Pierre Flett, 36, and Jared Jackson Bushie, 32, both of Winnipeg, have been charged with second-degree murder. Flett is also charged with possession of methamphetamine, several offences related to firearms and failing to comply with a release order.

The two men have a history of using weapons illegally, court records show, and both are subject to a lifetime weapon ban.

In January 2022, Flett was sentenced to four years, equal to about a year-and-eight months considering time served, in provincial court for weapons possession contrary to a court order, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition without a licence, as well as court order breaches, records show.

The charges stemmed from a May 15, 2019, traffic stop by Winnipeg police in which Flett and four others were found in an SUV on Watt Street that had an obscured licence plate.

Officers seized a slew of weapons, including a loaded sawed-off shotgun, and three masks from the vehicle.

While out on bail, Flett was picked up with a can of bear spray and a stun gun on Ellice Avenue and Burnell Street on Aug. 7, 2021, which resulted in another weapons charge and court order breaches. Earlier that year, he failed to appear in court.

He’s originally from Peguis First Nation, court heard.

Bushie was sentenced in provincial court in January for drug possession, possessing a prohibited weapon contrary to a court order, failing to comply with his release and theft under $5,000.

In April 2023, while addicted to methamphetamine, he was asked by a friend to help her pick up a TV from a third party in exchange for the drug, court was told, but the TV didn’t belong to them.

His friend pushed her way into the victim’s house and Bushie took the TV out to a vehicle, resulting in the theft charge.

In October, while bound by a curfew, he was found with 13.8 grams of meth and a Taser, which resulted in the drug charge and the two court order breaches.

He was given a 13-month sentence, minus time served, which equalled about 201 further days in jail, as well as a lifetime weapons prohibition.

The Winnipeg Police Service has asked anyone with information regarding the slaying, including video, to contact investigators at 204-986-6508, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
