Mental health claims by city employees on the rise

Psychological claims among City of Winnipeg employees increased last year, rising 31 per cent from 2022.

A new workplace safety report notes psychological claims accepted by the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba rose to 182 last year, up from 139 the previous year and accounted for 34 per cent of all time lost to WCB claims.

“Psychological claims to the WCB can occur based on a number of factors, including exposure to violence, mental stress, burnout, and other critical incidents in the workplace,” the report notes.

The total number of work-related injury and illness claims for city staff that were accepted by the WCB fell one per cent, dropping to 1,246 from 1,254 during the same period, while time loss claims dipped five per cent, to 874 from 919.
