Old Kildonan road to receive facelift

The Manitoba government is giving $6 million to the city to repave a road in Old Kildonan and create a walking path.

Mollard Road, located before the Perimeter Highway near West St. Paul, will get a facelift to accommodate new buildings in the area, a provincial news release said Sunday.

Members of the Sikh Society of Manitoba advocated for the repaving after the society opened a new building on Mollard in 2021 that includes a school, library and place of worship, the release said.

“For decades, the community has been asking governments to recognize the importance of safe road infrastructure for the growing number of weekly visitors who use this road to access the Sikh Society of Manitoba,” Gurmit Singh Panchhi, president of the Sikh Society of Manitoba, said in the release.

The money for the project is coming from the Municipal Economic Development Infrastructure program, which funds municipal projects meant to enhance safety and security.

“With the addition of a repaved road and new trail, families from across the city will be able to visit their place of worship, education and community more easily. They will see an improved quality of life in an area of Winnipeg that has been neglected for many years,” Premier Wab Kinew said in the release.
